My dining room – in progress

Some of you have been following along {remember this post? and this one?} as I figure out how to best utilize my dining room. I want it to be pretty and functional, and as the only place to put a table in our home, I can’t turn it into a full-time office/playroom, but since we don’t have an office/playroom, this one rooms serves as all three, often simultaneously.

Over the Christmas break, we made a trip to Ikea for one of their oh-so-wonderful Expedit shelving units. We took down the Pottery Barn wine shelves that have lived in the corner for five years. The space looked like this for a while:

Keep in mind that it’s not always sunny and beautiful when we tackle projects around here. Some of the in progress pictures are dark and grainy or yellow-ish. I never claimed to be a photographer and you still get the idea, right?

Said wine shelves were perched on top of the shelving unit for a while as we were trying to decide whether to hang them somewhere else or not. Then, I started organizing the shelves to house some of Molly’s toys and some of my SBN/Junior League/teaching stuff that I use almost every day.

I love the white bins I found at Target {bottom cubes} and the file box from Container Store. Don’t fret – you’re not missing anything fun on top. The wine shelves are still there. But then I snagged two more white bins at Target and was hosting a Junior League meeting at my house, so now the shelves look like this:

Obviously we’re going to repaint to cover up the patches from taking down the wine shelves and I still have some styling to do to make everything as pretty and functional as I desire, but overall, I think it’s coming along well! The bins are plenty roomy for a lot of Molly’s toys and I love having my work stuff so accessible {as in, not moving around piles of stuff and pulling on overstuffed drawers!}. The best part is, it doesn’t take up more room than what we had there previously.

The only problem is figuring out where to store the wine glasses that used to be on the shelves. Oh, what problems we face, right?

And, for even more fun, I found some pretty dupioni silk drapes that I wanted to give a whirl, so I bought them and then sweetly asked Jim to hang the rod for me.

I’m trying to decide if I’m going to hang the same panels on the other window, behind the huntboard or find a coordinating roman shade. I’m leaning toward the curtains, but need to see some pictures of curtains behind furniture before I decide. Send some my way, if you come across any!

Slowly but surely, we are figuring out this space and making it work for us!

{Gift Ideas} Girls’ Dollhouses and other gifts

Did you have a dollhouse as a child? My little sister and I got beautiful Victorian doll houses for Christmas one year – blue for me and pink for Whitney – and I played with it for years, becoming somewhat obsessed with buying furniture for it and then rearranging the furniture for hours.

My mom wants to get Molly a dollhouse for Christmas this year and I had so much fun looking at them, trying to decide which one I wanted Molly to have. The Pottery Barn one is adorable and very cottage-y, and of course the furniture and dolls are so sweet, but I decided on a Plan Toys dollhouse instead.

Once I saw this one, it was pretty much a no-brainer. Although Plan Toys has several dollhouses to choose from, I wanted Molly to have The Green House. It has a wind turbine, solar panels, rain barrel and recycling bins! And, the best part is that Plan Toys have a minimal impact on the environment.

I can only hope that Molly is as excited about her dollhouse as I am! I know I will have to restrain from buying a ton of accessories for it right away – it comes furnished, and my mom got the nursery furniture too. There’s a super cute dog house and an outdoor vegetable garden that we might have to have though!

Does your daughter have a dollhouse? Beverly is still trying to decide which one to get Addison. Any suggestions?

Some of the other things that I’m thinking about for Molly this year {thanks to Beverly’s ideas!} are a sling or carrier for her baby dolls and maybe a mixer or blender for her kitchen.

*Just so you know, I was in no way compensated for this post. I am really just THAT excited about getting this dollhouse for Molly and I really, really love Plan Toys.

{Holiday Gift Guide} Toys for Tots

There are so many neat toys for babies and children out there!  I love to find original toys for my own daughter and to give as gifts.  {And I prefer things that don’t light up or make too much noise!}  I’ve had a lot of fun shopping for Molly, my niece and nephews, and some of our family friends this holiday season.

I think my *favorite* toys this year are the plush play sets.  You can find a huge selection of plush items for girls and boys right now – tea sets, food pieces, doctor’s bags, tool kits…you name it, you can probably find someone who’s made it out of fabric and stuffing!  Two of my favorite finds:

Little Picklepotamus

Nifty Kid Stuff

I think my nephew would love these Paper Jamz guitars…I’m still trying to figure out exactly how they work, but I checked them out at a local toy store and they seem so cool!

Paper Jamz

I can’t wait until Molly is a little older so we can have family game night.  Beverly and her kids already love to play this game:  Zingo.  It’s a great multi-age, unisex game that is simple, yet encourages communication and enhances logical thinking skills.  {I can’t help it – I’m a teacher, so I’m always looking for educational toys!}

Have a budding artist on your hands?  Need an answer to rainy day boredom?  This Art Jar is perfect!  I love that it’s full of different items – papers, pom poms, zig zag scissors…everything a child needs to stay occupied for oh, about ten minutes.  Or at least make a good mess!
