Alligator Inspiration

I shared a few pictures from Thatcher’s Alligator birthday party yesterday. What a fun theme for any boy, but it was especially fitting for Thatcher because his nickname is Thatcher-gator!

A few weeks ago, I was at a Shrimp and Grits trunk show and thought their alligator collection was too adorable; then, I was flipping through my Pottery Barn Kids catalog the other day and saw the alligator sheets and beach towels.

What other alligator items have you seen for spring? They seem to be popping up in a few unexpected places {like sheets!} but they aren’t totally everywhere yet, which is fun. Are you planning an alligator theme party for this spring or summer?

{Sweet Parties} Thatcher’s Alligator Party

We were recently contacted by our sweet client Ashley about a custom alligator invitation for her son Thatcher’s first birthday. We have a green and orange alligator invitation in the shop, but Ashley was looking for something lighter and wanted green & blue as the main color scheme. We created invitations, personalized notecards for Thatcher, a banner for the birthday guy’s high chair and favor stickers.

Look at this darling smash cake!

You have to check out Ashley’s sweet blog to see more pictures! Everything looked so cute and they even had a last minute party venue change. That would totally stress me out, but it looks like she pulled everything off effortlessly.

Thanks so much for choosing Sweet Birdie’s Nest Ashley {and for sharing your fun pictures with us!}.

{Sweet Parties} Benjamin’s Lego Party

Beverly’s middle son Benjamin turned SIX earlier this month and he wanted a Lego celebration! It took a bit of manpower and some late nights on Beverly’s part to pull everything off, but the party was super cute and best of all, Benjamin had a blast! Both of Beverly’s boys’ birthdays seem to sneak up after holiday rush, plus we had a slew of custom orders right before Benjamin’s party, AND all three of Beverly’s kiddos were sick for a week. I’m impressed she had a party at all!

There wasn’t a lot of Lego graphics to choose from, so Beverly created a Lego man to use on the invitation and decorations, and even Benjamin’s shirt! The one Lego figure was Lego enough to satisfy Benjamin’s desire for a Lego party but subtle enough for Beverly’s desire to stay far away from anything too theme-y.

Have you seen the Lego storage from The Container Store? It’s SO cute, and functional to boot! I ran over to our local store to pick up a few items for Beverly to use during the party and *bonus* – the boys got Lego storage out of the deal!

On the party day, Jim and Ben helped out by blowing up and hanging the balloons & streamers.

Jackson and Benjamin pitched in and pitched several rolls of streamers into the trees in the front yard. Very festive, don’t you think?

I am so glad we could celebrate with Benjamin {and Beverly too!}.

Spring = Shopping!

Have I mentioned that I LOVE shopping for new clothes for Molly each season? I’ve gotten a few dresses and play sets from local trunk shows, but a big part of her clothing budget is reserved for Tea Collection. The day Beverly and I got our catalogs in the mail, we spent a few {ok, a lot of} minutes pouring over the pages trying to decide which dresses and sets to get the girls for spring. I love how Tea Collection creates the wardrobe sets where the items easily mix and match. It makes allowing Molly to choose her own outfits a little less painful.

Anyway, here are the items I can’t wait to add to my shopping cart soon! {Scroll down for a coupon code to use on all this cuteness!}

And…I found a little something for myself too. This top is screaming my name! Gray, tan, ikat, forgiving…

Tea Collection is offering a one time use coupon code good for 10% off your total purchase (no minimum required) with promo code SS12SAS valid through 3/31/12.

**There is an affiliate code embedded in the links above. We are not provided any clothing by Tea Collection in return for this post. We just love their products and want to share them with you.

Yay! A fun freebie!

Hi y’all! We’ve been here, just incredibly busy thanks to YOU {our wonderful clients!} and sick kids and birthdays and you know…life! Our business is steadily gathering steam and as the orders roll in, blogging really takes a back seat. Don’t fret – you can always find us on Twitter, Facebook and Pinterest if you find yourself needing a Nest fix.

I’m adding some new things to the shop, printing cupcake toppers and banners to cut/assemble/ship tomorrow and half-watching my new obsession, “The Voice.” Just a bit ago, my dining room table looked like this:

Pretend you can see lots of mini bags of conversation Sweethearts and red ribbon! I keep forgetting Valentine’s Day is tomorrow. How horrible would it have been if I had forgotten to print and cut these before school tomorrow?

Did you purchase our Valentine’s printables? If so, we’d love to see how you used the cards, bag toppers, stickers and/or cupcake toppers!

————————

You help us grow our business every day by sharing our name with your friends and family. Last week, I noticed we were only a few “likes” away from 300 followers on Facebook, so I told you if you helped us get there, I’d give you a free printable! Within half an hour, you guys had spread the news and we ended up with 301 fans.

I pinned his quote on Pinterest a while back and I keep coming back to it. After a particularly busy week last week, I decided I needed to print and frame this quote and display it in a prominent place in my home.

I have these two floating shelves between the two windows in my family room that were in need of some styling. I grabbed a simple matted frame, whipped up the printable {in my favorite color, PURPLE} and voila! Instant reminder of *the* most important thing and some not-so-lonely-looking shelves anymore.

And in the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we want to share this printable with you! I redid the text in a warm brown color for you and made it available as a full-page printable, so there’s no cutting involved! Just find a matted 8×10 frame, print & insert and display.

Find the free download here!

If you decide to print and display this quote in your home, send us pictures how how you use it. We’d love to see!

Fun Finds

Last month, while Jim and I were perusing the eclectic shops of Asheville, he noticed and pointed out the perfect piece of art for the Sweet Birdies:

I gasped and said I had to have them! Lo and behold, there were TWO of these {and they were *slightly* different, which made them even more cool}. However, I had also said I had to have about ten other things that we had already purchased. So I took a picture, sent it to Beverly and waited for her reply. If she had to have them, too, then well…I had to get them, right?

She didn’t respond right away {I mean, seriously…why can’t a mother of three respond to my text right away on a Saturday afternoon?} so we went to a brewery nearby for a pre-dinner drink. Beverly finally responded and said that yes, she had to have one for her office! So I ran out of the brewery, leaving my coat on my chair, and hustled down the block back to this shop.

I stopped dead in my tracks because there was only ONE of these sculptures left. In the ten minutes since we had left the store, someone bought one of these? What are the odds of that?! I frantically looked around and found that one had been set down across the aisle. I quickly grabbed both of them. Now mine lives on my new Expedit shelves in my dining room, with my paper samples and client info.

Aren’t they SO sweet and perfect for us? The shop owner said that a local artist makes them and has an Etsy shop, but I haven’t had any luck finding her. Does anyone recognize these birdies?

Another sweet piece of art that we got on our trip was a cute print for Molly’s room by Melissa Moss. The print we got is called “stay,” and I can’t find it on her website, but there were so many adorable ones that I was totally tearing up looking at them.

This one, called “i miss you when you’re asleep,” was definitely in the running but the print we got is pink and black, so it goes with the colors of the nursery. {Do you still call it a nursery when you have a 2 and a half year old?}

As I was looking through the gallery on Melissa’s website, I came across her blog and saw a new Valentine’s print that is perfect for our bedroom! I might have to get in touch with Melissa so I can snag that new piece – I’ve been pinning and favoriting {yes, I just made up that word} art ever since we got our new bedding.

Go check her out and tell me you don’t find a piece that doesn’t speak to you!

{Holidays} Valentine’s Day Collections

I cannot believe it’s February 1! Molly is already talking about Valentine’s Day and the stores have had their Valentine’s loot and decorations out since December 26, it seems like. I don’t know about you, but I don’t love the generic character Valentine’s cards. We created two simple printable collections for you guys. And the best part? They’re only $5 each and you get so much more than what’s in the one box you get at a discount store.

Each collection includes a printable card for you {or your child} to fill in the “to” line and sign her name, 4 cupcake topper designs, and a sheet of 2-inch stickers. All you need is a color printer, a 2-inch punch, cardstock and sticker stock.

I have found that the cupcake toppers are cute at breakfast for muffins or pancakes, are adorable in a sandwich at lunch or in brownies for dessert. You can also forgo the stick and use them as tags or labels.

{Sweet Parties} Carly’s Dino-mite Celebration

One of our sweet repeat customers, Dione, recently contacted us about her daughter Carly’s 5th birthday party. They had decided to have the party at a local natural history museum and wanted to use our dinosaur collection. We tweaked the colors a bit, changing the blue to turquoise, and Dione & Carly were both please with the results! We got some pictures from Dione via email the other day and I might have squealed when I saw them. Everything turned out SO cute! {And you must check back, because she sent pictures from her other daughter’s birthday party and a baby shower that I can’t wait to share with you!}

I think it can be so hard to make the party room at a venue personal and customized, but by working *with* the colors and theme and using lots of color through table coverings, signs, ribbons and even the utensils, one can really transform a big, blah room into a festive place!

Look how cute the birthday girl and her sister are checking out the cake.

One of the party favors were dinosaur shaped crayons from a fellow Etsy shop. I love when customers want the coordinating bag toppers for the cellophane bags. I’m not sure exactly, but that’s one of my favorite things we offer. So simple, but cute!

Y’all – Dione made those lunch boxes. She included a turkey & cheese sandwich cut into a dinosaur shape, Cheetos, and a mandarin orange cup. Then she used our stickers to keep the ribbon ‘tied,’ so the party-goers didn’t have to mess with a knot. And do you see what I mean about COLOR? All the colors are so fun and really tie the party together.

What party isn’t complete without sweet treats?! The dinosaur cake, cupcakes and dino shaped Rice Krispy treats were a hit, I’m sure. {And now I totally want a Rice Krispy treat. Totally random, but he hospital where I delivered Molly had delicious ones; we’d get one during the break at our birthing classes, and then I sent Jim down to the cafeteria to get one every day after M’s birth!}

Thank you, Dione, for asking us to create these items for Carly’s birthday and for sharing the awesome pictures. We can’t wait to share the other parties, too!

More notecard designs! {And some purple love.}

Y’all know I LOVE stationery – note cards in particular! A few weeks ago, Beverly and I were brainstorming some new collections for the shop and we came up a lot of fun ideas. First up, I want to share these two new note card designs.

The best news is these are in the shop, ready for purchase. {Just click on “Shop the Nest” on the right to go right to our shop.} Want them personalized? Contact us! We would love to create personalized stationery for you. I think note cards make a great gift for anyone — even yourself!

And how fun is this post? Julia sent me this blog this morning, thinking I’d love the purpleness of it. How cute is that? Thanks for sharing, Jules!

My dining room – in progress

Some of you have been following along {remember this post? and this one?} as I figure out how to best utilize my dining room. I want it to be pretty and functional, and as the only place to put a table in our home, I can’t turn it into a full-time office/playroom, but since we don’t have an office/playroom, this one rooms serves as all three, often simultaneously.

Over the Christmas break, we made a trip to Ikea for one of their oh-so-wonderful Expedit shelving units. We took down the Pottery Barn wine shelves that have lived in the corner for five years. The space looked like this for a while:

Keep in mind that it’s not always sunny and beautiful when we tackle projects around here. Some of the in progress pictures are dark and grainy or yellow-ish. I never claimed to be a photographer and you still get the idea, right?

Said wine shelves were perched on top of the shelving unit for a while as we were trying to decide whether to hang them somewhere else or not. Then, I started organizing the shelves to house some of Molly’s toys and some of my SBN/Junior League/teaching stuff that I use almost every day.

I love the white bins I found at Target {bottom cubes} and the file box from Container Store. Don’t fret – you’re not missing anything fun on top. The wine shelves are still there. But then I snagged two more white bins at Target and was hosting a Junior League meeting at my house, so now the shelves look like this:

Obviously we’re going to repaint to cover up the patches from taking down the wine shelves and I still have some styling to do to make everything as pretty and functional as I desire, but overall, I think it’s coming along well! The bins are plenty roomy for a lot of Molly’s toys and I love having my work stuff so accessible {as in, not moving around piles of stuff and pulling on overstuffed drawers!}. The best part is, it doesn’t take up more room than what we had there previously.

The only problem is figuring out where to store the wine glasses that used to be on the shelves. Oh, what problems we face, right?

And, for even more fun, I found some pretty dupioni silk drapes that I wanted to give a whirl, so I bought them and then sweetly asked Jim to hang the rod for me.

Before:

After:

I’m trying to decide if I’m going to hang the same panels on the other window, behind the huntboard or find a coordinating roman shade. I’m leaning toward the curtains, but need to see some pictures of curtains behind furniture before I decide. Send some my way, if you come across any!

Slowly but surely, we are figuring out this space and making it work for us!
